Wednesday, June 14, 2017AN106 - Partial Discharge Testing & Long Term ReliabilityMost of us think of High-Reliability applications as limited to Spacecraft missions. The fact is a non-repairable application can also be defined as high cost or limited access of the power supply. Reliability of the high voltage capacitor being used in these type of applications is of the utmost importance. CalRamic Technologies focuses on the proper designs, materials used, and strict processing of its components to ensure reliability. Screening and testing for final inspection is vitally important to qualify the component. For high reliability applications, Partial Discharge Corona testing is a final screening test. It is one of the most practical tests to detect minor and major defects in Ceramic Capacitors. Application Note 106 outlines the general theory and screening criteria for High Voltage Ceramic Capacitors. Please feel free to contact one of our Technical Representatives with questions regarding your specific application at info@calramic.com. Tuesday, January 24, 2017CalRamic Capacitor Education Series: Mechanical Configurations AN109-3CAPACITOR BASICS III – Mechanical ConfigurationsIn our continuing educational series on ceramic capacitors, we are sharing the Application Note 109-3, Capacitor Basics 3 - Single-layer versus Multilayer designs. In their simplest form ceramic capacitors are comprised of a single sheet or layer of dielectric with electrodes printed on each side. This approach may be ideal for higher voltage, lower capacitance designs, but may not be considered practical for applications where a significant amount of capacitance is required. Material and process constraints place finite limitations on the overall maximum size of a plate and the minimum thickness that one can reliably cast dielectric. Once those limitations have been reached the engineer is forced to look at alternative methods by which these challenges can be managed and multilayer capacitor designs provide that option. We offer many different configurations for High Voltage Ceramic Capacitors. Give us a call to discuss your application and the best capacitor solution for your project. Wednesday, January 11, 2017CalRamic Capacitor Education Series: Capacitor Types AN109-2CAPACITOR BASICS II – Capacitor TypesContinuing with our educational series we discuss the various types of capacitors and their functions. In practice, capacitors are available in many different forms. They can vary by the type dielectric utilized, the size, shape and nature of the electrodes used and the type of packaging employed. All of these variables can strongly affect the characteristics of the capacitor and the type of application for which these devices are most suitable. For high voltage capacitors, CalRamic only offers ceramic dielectrics, but awareness of the other dielectrics is important when designing a high voltage power supply. The entire series can be found on our Application Notes page. Wednesday, December 7, 2016CalRamic HV Capacitor Education Series: Application Note 109-1
During the next couple months, we will be releasing our high voltage ceramic capacitor educational series. Each application requires different capacitor specifications, which include design, material and screening. Our educational series will help you integrate our capacitors into your specific application. AN109-1 starts with the basics on how capacitors work.
CAPACITOR BASICS I – How Capacitors WorkA capacitor is an electrical device which serves to store up electrical energy for release at a predetermined time. In its most basic form, it is comprised of three essential components, two (2) metal plates or conductors, separated and insulated by the third part called the dielectric. A capacitor should not be confused with a battery inasmuch as both devices store energy, but unlike a battery that relies on a chemical reaction to generate electrons, a capacitor can’t produce electrons, it can only store them...AN109-1 can be read in its entirety through our Application Notes Page.
